What is the K53 observation method?
A defensive-driving system of checking mirrors and blind spots, signalling in good time, and only then manoeuvring — applied to every turn, lane change and stop.
When may I cross a solid no-overtaking line?
You may not drive to the right of a no-overtaking line (RM1) — except to enter or leave an entrance on the other side, or to pass a stationary obstruction, when safe. A no-crossing line (RM2) may only be crossed to pass a stationary vehicle or obstruction.
Who has right of way at an uncontrolled intersection?
South African law has no general “yield to the right” rule there. K53 requires you to look right, left and ahead for cross traffic, approaching traffic and pedestrians, and to proceed only when it is safe. (At a traffic circle you yield to traffic from your right; at a four-way stop the vehicle that stopped first goes first.)
